New Delhi 2020: On 26 January when roads in Kashmir were barricaded, communications snapped out partially across the valley and there were restrictions put in place, co-founder of People’s Democratic Party in Kashmir Muzaffar Hussain Beig received India’s third-highest civilian award in Public Affairs. In his address to the media, he said that the award was not conferred on him but on the “people of Jammu Kashmir”. He further stated that President of United States Donald Trump and PM of Pakistan Imran Khan had accepted the Indian state’s position on Kashmir and are actually pinning for the autonomy of Kashmir.
However, it still remains to see how receiving a Padma Bhushan while Kashmir was facing its longest curfew, will affect him in Kashmir where pro-India politicians are often seen with suspicion by local Kashmiri’s who wish to resolve the Kashmir conflict according to the United Nations resolution. The development comes when the European parliament is about to issue its statement on Kashmir lockdown and Citizenship Amendment Act.
